Quick Update on Max from Mom

Hello again,
The surgeon consult went well, Max allowed Dr B (surgeon) and  Dr. L (Physical Therapy) to manhandle him and he never reacted in a negative way and of course they all fell in love with him too, I am so proud of my boy.
Dr B and Dr L seems to think, based on x-rays and physical exam,  that Max has a partial tear of his ACL, Max is back on Previcox Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID) and a twice daily supplement called Move Free Advanced PlusMSM.  For the next 4-6 weeks he is restricted from basically everything. No running, stairs, jumping, rough play, etc...ugh! Two boxers, under the age of three who love to play like there is no tomorrow...wish us luck!

He will be starting physical therapy and hydro therapy with Dr L in January.  I hope he likes water because Maggie does not! Then back to the surgeon in a month for another exam and maybe more x-rays. They also said that he has been injured for a while and it was ignored, so he does have some muscle atrophy and damage to his joints in his left leg, hopefully we can keep it from getting worse and avoid surgery, only time will tell.

Thank you again for all of your support, we feel the love.
Janelle,
Maggie Mae and Max

  6. You knows, my sis Sydney had a brokened hip when we got her out of the shelter and her one leg we called her chickun leg coz it woz all shriveled up and she could not use it at all so she hobbled on 3 legs. Wotefur peeples had her afor nefur had it fixed fur YEARS! She had an operashun then fiscal therapies where they tried to drown her in the big fish tank but she survived and it fixed her leg and she uses it fine now so fiscal therapies does good things. I say the hardest part fur you be not hasing zoomies with each udder. Mebbe stick to playing bitey face coz then you don't need to use your legs. I love playing bitey face.

  8. I am so sorry to hear about the troubles with Max's leg. Sigh Haylie was diagnosed with Hip Displasia at 2 so I totally understand how you feel trying to keep a rowdy pup confined :) Hang in there!

  9. If Max is anything like Uji he will rest his leggy when it hurts and when it feels good he will play. They do seem to know their limits. I have to say Uji does love a good massage which helps his muscles as he had some atrophy but it is getting better by the day. We have paws and fingers and eyes crossed for your darling boy and are sending him healing vibes by the lorry load.
He is in the best possible hands with you as his Mom and the best possible paws with Maggie as his sister. He could not have found a better family.

  13. Mom's never had to keep me quiet, but she had to keep my sissy Cinderella quiet when she was going through heartworm treatment. It was hard on all of us! I know you'll get through it, though, and Max will be better than ever!

  19. Mom says she doesn't know how she could do that here except for maybe Phantom. Good luck, but it sure beats surgery if it will work. Lots of good chew toys and mind games should help. Paws crossed for Max.

  21. Max, we hope your therphy works for your leggie. Our bloodhound when she was with us blew her knew out ACL tear. She had surgery and came through like a champ. They took 200lb tess fishing line and doubled it over like 4 times to make her legment new. She spent a week in a cast and limited exercise (leash walks) for 6 weeks. She never had any problems after that and ran and jumped like no tomorrow. She was just barley 2 when it happened and she lived to be 12 years old. Just get lots of rest and do your therpy and hopefully you will avoid the knife. Sniffs, The HoundDogs

Good luck in the 'quiet' department. Roxy lasted for only 3 missed walks instead of the recommended 2 weeks.

  28. Well, I sure am glad that Max may be able to avoid surgery. But, I understand your trepidation about keeping Max and Maggie quiet and not playing!

Our dog, R, had a long period of enforced rest when he was a year old. We had to get sedative drugs from the vet to keep him quiet!!!!! He is a live wire! I hope that it's easier with Max.

    We're thinking of you.

  29. No running, no stairs, sounds like my life these days. Find yourself a comfy cozy bed and relax! That's what I do and it's really not so bad.

Sending you lots of healing prayers, Max. Hope physical therapy goes well.

  31. Poor Max! I'm just glad that you're in a furever home that cares enough about you and is able to make sure you recieve the treatment you need.

I wish your mom lots of luck in trying to keep you calm. While Chico is very laid back and calm, Shiver can very hyper at times and I can only imagine two active dogs.

  32. Staying less active is very hard! Trust me, we will works on it together. Mine is the cruciate ligament and I am seeing some improvements. Long legged doggies gets these problems and it doesn't mean we are unhealthy - it just means we are awesome, you knows like professional athletes that hurt themselves in the same way ;)

  35. MAX! That is almost totally the exact same thing that is going on with me. I hope you can find a nice water therapy place like I did. The treadmill is a lot less scary than actually getting into a pool.
