Update on Max From Mom

Hello Everyone,
First of all, thank you so much for all of your kind words, thoughts and prayers for Max, it is comforting to know that you all ready care for him and it means so very much to me and to
Maggie Mae. :)
We have good news and some not so good news about Max.  The good news is that Max's hips are fine, no signs of hip dysplasia, the not so good news is that the x-rays did find a problem with the joint in his left leg....

"Another common problem that can occur in the elbow of dogs is osteochonritis dissecans (osteochonrosis) in which a flap of cartilage breaks loose within the joint causing pain when it is trapped between the cartilaginous elements of the joint. Too rapid a growth rate, genetic factors and trauma to the joint can all play a part in causing this disease. These flaps or joint mice need to be removed surgically. Because genetics plays a part in this disease, these dogs should not be bred."

So it is off to the surgeon for Max. :(  Our vet is going to call me in a few days after he has consulted with the surgeon (who is someone we know and trust, he worked on our previous boxer Samantha), then we can go ahead and make the appointments. The perils of a rescued or adopted animal, you don't know their health history or genetics.
I am just so thankful that he is ours because we love him so much and he will get the all the care he needs, if he was on the streets...

Thanks again for your support, it means so much.
We will keep you posted.
Blessings,
Janelle, Maggie Mae and Max

  5. The fact that it's not dysplasia is good. The fact that you know the surgeon is also good. The best fact by far is that Max is somewhere where he'll get the most love and attention any dog can hope for .

  11. Max! You are lucky to live with such a wonderful family that is going to take good care of your owie. What is with dogs and their knees anyway?

I hope that everything goes OK and that you get to go to the physical therapy spa afterwards. It is going to be hard to stay calm and heal. You will need to practice your meditation skills.

  13. I guess it's a good thing if this had to happen, that it happened after he went to live with you. His outlook might not have been so good if he was homeless.

Paws crossed here for an easy, successful surgery for Max.

  41. Oh Maggie I is sorry to hear about Max. I is going through a similar things rights now. I tore the cruciate ligament in my knee. However, we are hoping it's a partial tear and I won't need surgery. I'll knows in a couple weeks. I have to have those sleepy meds for xrays and our vet doesn't want me to have to have the sleepy meds twice. So if I need the xray I am getting the surgery. I sure hope that Max feels betters soon.

  43. I'm so sorry to hear your news, Max. I hope that the surgeon can fix you up perfectly.

If it's any consolation, I had a yellow lab who had congenital OCD in all his leg joints and his spine. When he was a young pup, the vets recommended putting him down to save him from a painful life. It wasn't possible to do surgery because so many joints were involved.

Well, thank goodness that he was allowed to live. He never could run hard or go for huge hikes but he had a very happy 14 years of mellow life. He's proof that OCD can be managed.

I will be thinking of you, Max.
